Throughout this online Graphic Design master’s course, you will explore design on an international scale, applying academic and research practices to your own work. What you'll learn

Across a series of research-led projects with practical elements, you will position your work in response to a range of contemporary cultural concerns and critical dialogues. You will be prompted to form a design response to a set of briefs that will challenge your creative skillset and encourage you to push the boundaries of the medium. As part of this process, you will engage with research as a fundamental aspect of the design process.

You will develop a foundation of theoretical knowledge and contextual awareness that will provide depth to your practice, allowing you to communicate with confidence, precision and purpose.

Modules

The modules have been specifically designed to be studied in a non-linear order, with the order in which you’ll study the modules depending on when you begin the course.

MA

You will need to complete four 30-credit modules and one 60-credit Major Project (180 credits in total). All modules on the course are compulsory and must be passed in order to complete the award.

PGDip

You will need to complete four 30-credit modules (120 credits in total), and will not complete a Major Project.

Duration study load

2 years

Based on the total learning time for the Postgraduate online courses, an average study week can be up to 25 hours. As our online courses are intended to be flexible, the time required to study will vary based on the level of study, the module week, and individual learning pace.

You'll learn through a blend of recorded learning content, learning activities, guest talks, tasks and discussion forums, which you'll access via our dedicated virtual learning environment. Entry requirements

Qualifications

An honours degree or Level 6 equivalent qualification is desirable. However, candidates without a degree or formal qualification are still encouraged to apply. If you'd like to discuss our entry requirements, speak to an advisor. 

Portfolio 

You will need to submit a digital portfolio of your graphic design practice. This may include previous project work and your current work-in-progress. It can take the form of a link to your blog or website and/or be presented as an interactive PDF. This will help the academic team assess your suitability for the MA Graphic Design.

Assessment

All assessments are through online submission. Assignments on MA Graphic Design (Online) can typically include:  

  • Practice-based assignments, for example designing a digital tool or process to aid collaboration 

  • Research-based assignments, for example reflecting on a cultural narrative (either historical or contemporary) which has received only limited critical attention. 

  • Work-based assignments that are grounded in your existing practice, where you apply tools such as storytelling or market research.
